question about cowbells

Last summer when I was fishing on a small, stocked trout lake and not having much luck, a fellow fisher-person who was having luck shared with me that he was having success trolling using cowbells. He said that the trout are attracted to the flash of the blades. I was wondering if someone could explain how these work - how do you attach them to your line, what other gear do you need, what has been your experience, etc.

Thanks!

cowbells are an inline trolling spinner rig...they can be found at most of the bigger fishing stores. You need a stout rod and line as they have a lot of drag to them. Usually a bait or spoon is pulled behind the spinner arangement. They do work fairly well in a stocked trout lake situation. I have had luck with them in the spring on bigger northern trout waters. There is a rig called a "flashlight troll" or something similar that has a mylar/plastic type blade that doesn't have quite the drag of the big blades.

Troutmaster, why do you say the guy was full of it?? Cowbells work well, especially during the summer when the trout go deeper. Are you sure you're a troutmaster???:) Mnfishgal; as mentioned, you need a hevier rod to pull cowbells. They come in a number of types and sizes, check out the Luhr Jensen HSOforum as they make lots of them. We usually troll a standard crawler harness about 18 inches behind the bell, but sometimes use small rapalas and other artificials if we don't have bait. It's pretty much a "meat" fishing technique; unless you hit a big fish the bells put up as much of a fight as a 12 inch fish! They work very well for splake in the summer.

I have had great success using cowbells in the Bemidji area trout lakes. Use my linecounter reel to find the right depth and just troll around the lake using the bowmount electric. Rig an 18" mono leader with a plain hook and crawler behind the trolling rig. Cabelas always has a nice selection of different makes and sizes.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
