Open Water Muskies?

Recommended Posts

Watching the fishing shows last weekend, I caught the musky hunter show and they were fishing open water muskies. Anyone have any luck doing this? Kind of seems like fishing for a needle in a haystack. How do you narrow your search and when is it most effective for you?

Structure . I watched one of those shows where they were fishing " open" water but they flashed on the depth finder and showed they were in 12' of water . So your still looking for some sort of structural change in the bottom like a rock pile , sunken island , weeds , break line , etc. A good lake map will show you what you need to find .

Baitfish, If youve got good electronics look for big schools of bait fish with big archs behind them and just try and match the baitfish. Defeinitly gonna try fishing for suspended ski's this year when the lakes start getting some pressure on them.

I look at the last weeks wind conditions and try to figure out where big pods of baitfish have ended up and start looking with my electroinics while speed trolling, once a bait pod is found I slow it down and work that pod for 15-20 minutes then move onto the next one.
