Crawlers are out

The crawlers are out for the picking. In 1 hour this morning I picked up 50 dozen. Good sturgeon bait.

Yeah, I may have to do some picking these next few nights. How do you keep yours, Harvey?

I buy the bedding and mix 10-12 dozen in a 5-6qt ice cream pail. What I do is mix up the bedding until the pail is 3/4 full with the bedding fairly damp. Then I add the crawlers to the top and put the cover on with many holes in the top.

Now, the next morning I look at the crawlers and if any didnt go to the bottom or into the bedding then I weed them out as they are weak. I keep them in a small fridge and turn the pails upside down every day or two and they will keep no problem for at least a month. When you turn the pail every other day and you see crawlers that are not in the bedding just pick those out and throw them away. Also, keep the bedding fairly damp and they will do well. Last year I picked approx 80 dozen and maybe lost 1 dozen and had them for 6 weeks. The nice part about the bedding is if you spill some or some drops on the boat carpet, it cleans up very easy. Dirt is a mess.

I bought the styrafoam box with the bedding to try instead of the plastic containers.I pick 12 - 14 Doz. each spring thats all I think can fit in the new container,Then every other week I add some store bought crawler food (yellow powder)They last into the fall I do sort out weak ones,and use the Icecream bucket crawlers first.UMM ICECREAM Bucket think I'll go to the store! Ya I do have a garage refridge.
