Pull Permanent off of lake?

Guest

Recommended Posts

With the warm temps approaching. 45+ for 3 or 4 days. Do you think that I should pull my permanent house off of the lake? My house weighs between 1500 and 2000 pounds. Just a little concerned about the temps getting so warm. Gonna hate to do it, but what are ya gonna do!

Crappie Hunter,

I'm posed with the same question my 8x12 shack is about 1000lbs but after the warmer temps on Mon. & Tues. I went out Tuesday nite and the Ice in my location was unchanged down here in the Metro. Plus starting Monday or Tuesday of next week looks like the lows are going to be real favorable for us hard water guys. I just checked the temp. this morning and it was 8 Deg. so I'm going stick it out over the weekend and hope the forcasted low's of below zero for next week are right.

Good Luck

I'm thinking about it myself. Although my 8x8 is very light, the ice where it's sitting is marginal at best. Thickness is close to 14". But is loaded with bubbles and frozen slush. Also, there seem to be a ton of cracks developing in the area. Will these cracks be a problem with the rising temps?

Weather guessers just said the temps this weekend will be in the lower 40's, On Monday we'll have mixed precipitation and 32. Snow would be fine with me, but NO RAIN!!!

The old timers tell me not to worry. But I am not as brave as they are.
I am in the same boat Dan, Cracks all over the place and with the Ice the way it has been this year it's an iffy call. Anybody else in the same boat??

Hells bells, it hit 50 out there today. I guess the same for tomorrow. The lake roads are wet. Very wet. The local marina told me that "a couple of people have pulled their houses off, but we are not pulling in our rental houses....yet." I was also told it wouldn't be a bad idea to check back on a daily basis. This shows me that they are concerned as well.

I'm headed to the lake tomorrow, but will bring the tow gear just in case. I'm just happy I don't need to drive my truck out there to retreive it. The sled is is bad enough.

Well,
I don't think you need to worry about your house goin through. The only thing I would think about is to make sure that it hasn't frozen down. I moved my friends on saturday and we ended up using a chisel and still losing some woodchips in the ice. Make sure all houses are movable, if you don't do it now you'll be sorry in the spring. I saw the neatest idea a couple of days ago. A guy had 2 heater fans connected to hoses that connected to steel pipes that went under the house and were the only things to touch the ice. Worked great, at first he was frozen in, 30 mins later, poof, off he drove.

I think they were off the mark with the temps this weekend. We saw temps in the 30's but nothing in the 40's. No water on the ice to speak of. The ice thickness is around 15.5 inches. I left it on the lake and am going to monitor the weather on SEVERAL different channels from now on. Crappies and Walleyes are still in February Hibernation mode on my lake. They are moving and tough to find. Some days they are hitting down the lake one side of me. Some days they are hitting the other side. Some days hitting where I am. We are going to have a cold front move in and I wonder if that is going to affect the fishing?

I moved my house today but didn't have any problems with it. I always keep it jacked up and enough blocks under it to keep it high enough. I like the idea of the pipes though. Sounds ingenious.

16 inches of good ice. This year I put my house out pretty early since we had 12 inches of ice. Surpisingly with all the warm weather I was able to move it out to deeper water and found 16 inches of good ice. The warm temps they forcasted never got as warm as predicted. AND, we got some nice cold temps the last few days and I think we are in for some more cold temps. Finally. Like they say, wait 5 minutes in MN and the weather will change!
Good Luck, Be Safe.
