Couple questions

Recommended Posts

Howdy, first are there muskies in L Pepin on the Miss R? And if so, why not more because I've never heard of anyone fishing there for them.

Second, regarding forage for muskies - whitefish, tulibees, ciscos, etc. They have so many names I can't keep em straight. Nonetheless, what environmental conditions do they require? Guess I want to know why LOTW for example has them but not other lakes/resorvoirs a bit further south. Thanks, later.

Can't answer the first part of the question, but the reason there's no ciscoes, whitefish, etc. further south is because they need large, deep bodies of water that stay relatively cool even during the summer months. When muskies feed on such forage, they are usually doing so while in deep water or suspended up near the bottom of the thermocline in mid-late summer. I usually associate such forage with lake trout, but those muskies have a hard time passing up a fat, juicy tulibee when given a chance.

There are muskies in Pool 4 (Lake Pepin) but I don't know if it is a fishable population. I don't know of anyone who targets them but given the forage base etc I know there is a monster or two hanging out. Since shad prefer open water trolling is the best option. Since Pepin is a boundary water you can use two rods per angler. Worst case there are some really nice pike out there too.

they are all differnt speicies whitefish look like tullibees but can get bigger. I don't know much about cisco's,the water just needs to stay I think under 55 or 60 that is why when there is a hot summer lakes that are shallower will have a die off. Ie millac"s
