late ice river crappies?

This year i want to try fishing some lateice river backwater crappies. should a person look for deep water or shallow water to fish , Are places with logs and dead trees a good place to fish?

You're not going to find a whole lot of deep backwater areas. River fish survive the winter in some very shallow sloughs. Wood is always a good fish attractor but is usually found in more highly currented area where the banks tend to get washed out. The Wabasha/Kellog area is a good place to start. Bait shops should get you pointed in the right direction. You can always drive up and down the river road and look for populations of anglers.
