Crankbait Rod

Looking to get a crankbait rod and I like the glass rods. What my question is, do most of the longer rods come in two pieces? Does this make a whole lot of difference in feel? I have all 1-piece rods now and I am concerned about a 2-piece, should I be? What is a popular length 6,6.5,7 or longer?

I use the St.Croix and Bass Pro Shops XPS series in the 8 foot lenght. They both have retractable butts.

Check out the new Rapala rods. They make these in many different lengths styles and some are designed for cranks.

I use an 8' one piece Avid series rod from St.Croix. The model# is AV80MF.

It is a casting rod designed for Steelhead fishing, so it has plenty of backbone and is rated for lures weighted from 3/8 to 3oz. The tip is nice and soft so it telegraphs your crankbaits very well.

I like this rod because it can be effectively used for a multitude of presentations (BB's & spinner or crankbaits and deep diving crankbaits). In a pinch, I bet you could use it for livebait rigging, however I would suggest something a little more sensitive.

Myself, I shy away from two-piece rods because I am a little concerned about their overall weakness compared to one-piece. Whether that is true or not, I could not tell you for sure.

I spent 2 weekends fishing just with crankbaits rods.Here are my opinions on these 6 crankbait rods.St. Croix-6'6" med.(rod about 5 years old)Great for whipping small to med. cranks and spinnerbaits up to 1/2oz.Rod has a nice bend when retriving and gives off a great vibration.Also when setting the hook, its like slow motion with a deep bend. Great for open water(clear/rocky lakes).You would have a hard time getting a fish out of the weeds or turning one if you were fishing by trees.St. Croix 7' med. Pro glass-Heavy rod good for throwing large spinerbaits, bucktails, and deep bass crankbaits.This rod is meant to be used throw baits overhand and with 2 hands.Castaway LB66 lite graphite -Great rod for throwing jerkbaits and topwaters.It also is great for throwing med. cranks(200 series bandits, 1/2oz. rattletraps around fallen trees.Has good tip and the backbone to pullfish out of weeds and trees. B.P.S. CS66MT Crankin stik.Best rod for the $$(has been going up $10 a year last few).A composite(graphite with fiberglass tip)Great for crankbaits, spinnerbaits and probably buzzbaits.A Real Surprise! Lew's speed stick a12917OC Med. lite,GREAT all-around crankbait rod nice and light with good vibration.I caught no fish with it so that's all folks.The Lews and the B.P.S. crankin stik were my 2 favorites.Maybe because they were new and I had the right baits tied on.All 5 were good rods.I also have a 7'6" glass catfish rod that I use to throw Muskie cranks.This is a nice rod and the price was great(soscompany.com)(your welcome!)Most important is a good crankin reel with a low gear ratio- I love Lew's BB1N or BB1NG's(have 7-looking for BB2'S).They don't make them anymore but if you get one- get a shimano or Lews one, not the Browning Made one.(they have a few plastic gears or something inside-cheapened them)You can cast cranks all day with a low gear ratio reel(garcia made some too).
