Making a stink!

Hello catfishers!!
I'm considering making my own catfish bait for those times I can't get to the crick and catch my own. I'm thinking a little cheese, some liver, pinch of a dead carp and some type of fuzz or cotton for making a good dough-ball. I want some smell which shouldn't be a problem but I want to stop or at least slow the rotting process. Can anyone recomend a good preservitive I can get to help with this? Thank you in advance for any advice or product you may recomend.

THe problem is that I only understood calcium and Sodium. who would have something like this? i.e.. Cabelas, wal-mart etc. My Chemistry is poor at best.
