Decoy flocking advice needed

Recommended Posts

Is anybody that has flocked their own decoy heads willing to share any tips? I am planning on buying a kit and would like to know how the process works? How long does it take? Are any kits better than others? Thanks in advance!

I've used a couple different brands of the flocking. Both the Black Widow and (Contact Us Please) i cant remember the other name, but i bought it off of hsolist worked well. Find urself either a small bottle with a cap like what is on a Ketchup bottle at a drive in resturant. U know its got a longer cylinder type tip on it with a hole in the skinny end of it. I have always used a household strainer and lightly sifted the flocking through that onto the heads and tails. I can not stress enuf the importance of doing a through job of cleaning and prepping ur surfaces first hand though! Get urself some 3M 180 grit sanding foam pads and go crazy with em! Its gunna take along time to get everything sanded really well but trust me from experience it is well worth the effort in the end. Otherwise ur gunna be re-flocking every single year! Also after sanding ur gunna want to apply some adhesive promotor. (It acts as a primer to allow the flocking to stick better to the plastic decoys.) After ur down with all this prep work ur finally ready to start the flocking process. I learned after spending alot of money on there pricey paint, that plain old flat rust-oluem in flat black works the very same as the paint black widow trys to sell ya. I would check hsolist first though and do a search for goose decoy flocking and see if the guy is still selling the kits. I know there was 2 different companies at the time selling kits, the one I purchased was 1 lb of black flocking and 1/4 lb. of white flocking along with all the (Secret Tips) ur gunna need to make em look real Nice! Good luck with the flocking u will not be disappointed and all ur huntn buddies will envy u!

If a guy is to buy flocking at a craft store, what do the nonhunting folks at the craft store call the flocking material or what section of the store is it found? Also, what do you use for adhesive? I've heard from some buddies that the process takes a long time. How long does it take you guys to flock a dozen heads? We're looking at flocking a couple dozen shells and up to five dozen bigfoots. New flocked bigfoot heads go for about $50/dozen. Trying to decide on buying new heads or flocking the dekes ourselves. Thanks again!!

Thats the million dollar question!! Thats were they have got me thus far also. I have no idea what you would call the flocking material or were it would be available!! It appears to look and feel like ground up sweatpants!! No kidding! The adhesive is just the paint, you apply the flocking when the paint is wet. Im not gunna lie it does consume a far amount of time when u include all the prep work that goes into the head with sanding and priming and all, but its still alot cheaper to do it urself rather than pay the $50 a dozen that foot wants. For $50 I have done well over 6 dozen heads, 3 dozen tails in both the black and white and I still have plenty enuf material to left to do almost that many more! So hope that will help answer ur questions!
