ROCKVILLE — A pickup that went though the ice on Pleasant Lake had to be pulled out by a tow truck Sunday.

Stearns County sheriff's deputies were called to the scene where a 1966 Chevy truck owned by Richard Held, 67, and driven by Brice Held, 41, went through the ice about 4 p.m. when the men tried to go ice fishing.

No one was injured.

Ice was reported to be 6- to 7-inches thick in the area. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recommends at least 4 inches of ice for walking, 5 inches for all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles, 8 to 12 inches for cars and small pickups and 12 to 15 inches for medium-sized pickups.

Never fails, 3 years back I was hauling my permanent out from the cabin with the four wheeler. I only brought it out about a 100 feet from shore as I was concerned with the 6 inches of ice I was on. Low and behold from accross the lake a older pick-up with a perm in tow comes blazing accross the lake, he made it about 100 yards before he jumped out of the truck and it all went down.

Luckily he was safe, ended up with a DWI, some 3000 in fines for the truck in the water and a couple more grand for winching it out. Truck came out in 3 pieces. Body, Chassis and Engine.

Imagine the look on his wifes face for that one.

Please everyone, use your head when your playing with your life. No ice is safe ice, not even when your following somebody elses trail. Ice can be tricky and changes all the time.
