Any Sabaskong Ice Reports?

Recommended Posts

I didnt check the ice myself but one guy that hunted with us who owns a resort up there checked it other day not too far from the gov't landing and said when he stuck his 16 inch chain saw blade straight down he never hit water. Think he was pulling my leg? Hard to believe that there would be that much more ice up there. And thats less than 30 miles as the crow flies from where I was fishing out here by Pine Island on the MN side, and there was a good foot there. He didnt say how many places he checked. I wanted to check it myself but I didnt have anything to get thru the ice. I thought about using my 300 WSM. Sounds like plenty of ice to me. My dad was going to drive his truck out there but my mom didnt think it was a good idea. lotsa deer heading south to mainland and a few timbers also. It was good running with the sleds, better if you were studded, I wasnt but my dad was. There has been quite few guys running all over the lake out there, not only the sabaskong bay area but over towards Fish narrows and that area. Probably be up to my folks place in Morson around Christmas and usually ending taking a cruise with dad on the sleds. Something we have been doing the last few years. Good luck and be safe! Brian

Thanks Brian, I apprecite the info. I don't know about 16 inches, but stranger things have happened. We were out on 8 in the duluth area yesterday so I can believe it. Looks like some early ice crappies are coming my way in a week or so. How's was the hunting...get any? Better yet hows the fishing on the MN side of LOW? Sounds like you've been out.

Anyhow Thanks and Take Care...Best of Luck in Your Hunting and Fishing Adventures! grin.gif

Hey Bill! I was in the I-falls today watching my nephew play hockey. They lost, 8 zip to the Falls. I called the Rainy Lake One Stop and you werent in, I was gonna stop in and introduce myself. I even asked our waitress for directions on how to get there. Maybe next time huh. Hunting was good, lotsa wolf tracks and deer traffic was unreal. 4 of us ended up with 4 deer, 3 does and a fawn. One guy that was with us was 16 years old and I was right by his side when he pulled the trigger on his first deer. Dropped it in its tracks so he was pretty excited. Didnt see anyone fishing out there though. I was out one morning on the MN side but we didnt nail them like from what we heard. 3 guys with only 4 eaters and I got one walleye that was 6 lb. Put on a good fight on 4 lb test. Took pics and released. At least we didnt get skunked. Back to work tomorrow and should be home friday morn so I might try the river that evening close to town here. I get to the Falls once in awhile and I got the One Stop in my cell phone list. Let me know when you head out for crappies and look forward to a report. Good luck and be safe out there. Brian

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
