Boar

Recommended Posts

Howdy rat boys, I've been toy'n with the idea about selkirk for a couple of yrs now, but would like some first hand advice from a rat whose tasted the cheese. licesens, landing, shore fishing, accomodations, any info would be great. Anybody wanna go? Plus I've fished the Red around Oslo for around 12 yrs, time permitting, would like to hook up with another experienced rat from the area,or if any southerner needs a little higher altitude. And those gatherings sound like great time. Any info would be great, anybody wanna fish would be better. Thanks, boar.

Hi Boar, Welcome!

I would enjoy going to the Channel Cat Mecca myself! Maybe this year...Hard to say right now. Do you live near the Red? We will be having a gathering up around Fargo this year.

Thanks for the welcome dark30, yea I'm about hour and half from fargo, North. easy drive , There is a nice little pub. park on the west side of the river from climax, which is 15 mn south of crookston with a really good boat landing, over night is cheap 3-5 bucks a night,I think, not sure though, lots of space, right on the river. If that helps for a spot. It's been a while since I've been there so I hope that info is correct. later, boar

Hey Boar, I've been up to Selkirk a couple of times & I can't recommend it enough for any hardcore cat fisherman. Every river rat should make that trip at least once. The average size of the cats below the Lockport dam is amazing, with lots of 20lb+ fish & a few pushing 30! Selkirk has a nice campground with showers, electricity & a boat landing. I camped there the first time up & had a nice spot on the river. It's right in the city & just a few miles from the Lockport Dam. I did some shorefishing for carp & sheepshead at the campground, but most of my catfishing was done below the dam. We drove up to Stu Mckay's Cats on the Red to launch each day. They have a boat landing, bait, licenses, food, tackle etc. We even caught a bunch of goldeyes off their dock to use for cutbait. This last spring I booked 2 nights at Stu's place & we had a blast. They have nice cabins at a good price right below the dam. Lot's of good shorefishing opportunities there too. In fact we had some of our best catfishing right in front of our cabin just a few feet from shore. I recommend reserving a spot at Cats on the Red. You might want to bring your own bait up in case the goldeyes aren't biting. I brought up a couple dozen dead suckers, but soon ran out. I think they sell shrimp & frozen shiners, but good fresh cut-bait is hard to find. The bait store in Selkirk only sold frozen suckers that weighed about 4 lbs. We thought is was funny but we ended up buying one big frozen sucker. It worked great but was tough to fillet. For more info, Stu Mckay can be found on the Red River forum. Good luck, Vern

If you or anyone else wanna sink some lead let me know via the forum, unfamiliar ground is best approached with a partner. Again thanks later, boar
