dog bone question

My dogs like to chew on those huge knuckle bones you get at discount stores -- The problem is they chew on it and break little pieces off and then they swallow them and get sick at 3 am.

Any thought to avoid this? How about other things they can chew on that they enjoy that will not break down.

I'd say that the only time that I would give my dog a bone that can splinter would be when I'm watching her eat it. The parts that splinter can be pretty sharp and do some damage internally. I go with the old rawhide and also a cow femur. She's been working on that for about 6 months now. The sell them basted with something she likes.

Try going to the local meat market and get marrow bones. My dogs used to eat them all the time. When they got the knuckles they did the same as yours, chew them up then yak them out later. With the marrow bones they generally tend not to splinter off, never had a problem with the dogs chewing on these.

I second the smoked bones sold at meat markets. I pay about $1.50 to $2.00 a pound. Sometimes I have to saw them into smaller pieces. My dogs like to lick out the marrow and chew on the outside. They don't splinter. Never had a problem. ps stepping on one going to the john at night is about the same as a LEGO.

....one more vote for the marrow bones. We get ours at Cub and they're cheap and last forever. But to avoid the dog barf, I usually boil them for 10 mins and then slide out the marrow. There's enuf goodies left on there for the pup...
