Red River-Lockport

Hey everyone, we're leaving tomorrow for the Lockport dam to catch some monster channel cats. We'll be staying at Cats on the Red. It sounds like it's going to be pretty cold, but I heard that they are catching a few fish. I guess I'll be dressing for winter. Is anyone else going to be there this weekend? I'll be back with a report after our trip. Vern

Word is it s a FRESH CUTBAIT bite, heavy on the FRESH.

If the cold hits hard and things runs tough dig deep in the main channel past Dr. Reeds place.

The hole behind the new bridge by Selkirk may be a good shot too, well worth a workout.

I also hear that the big eyes are still on the chew out on the marsh. So if the cats are not cooperating I would sure check that out, you may score a monster eye?

Good fishing Vern, catch a SUMO PIGGY!

Hey guys, we had a great trip up to the Lockport Dam. Thanks again for your help Eddy. We fished Thursday night & most of Friday. Despite the cold & windy weather, the cats were biting. We caught about 20 cats with an average length of 34". The biggest cat was a monster just under 38". I think we would have done even better, but the cold & wind kept us off the water at times. We were using cut-bait brought from home & spent most of our time fishing below the dam. The best bite was between 6:00 & 8:00 p.m. Bring plenty of bait if you are going up. We ran out of bait on Friday and tried for goldeye with no luck. We went to the bait store in Selkirk & all they had were frozen shiners & giant frozen suckers. I'm talking about 2-4 lb frozen suckers! We thought it was pretty funny, but we bought a sucker that was about 3 lbs. After it thawed & we cut it up, it worked great. It was just a little more work than we wanted. I'd rather chunk up some 7"-10" suckers. Cats on the Red was great & I highly recommend it. It's located right at the dam, has a boat landing and they cook burgers throughout the day! We even had a big picture of legendary catman Otis "Toad" Smith in our room. I'll post a couple pictures when I get them. Vern
