Gull Lake Muskie Stocking meeting Oct. 6th

Just wondering how many muskie fisherman will be attending this public meeting that the DNR has planned? I should be able to make it if I can get off work in time. My parents live in Brainerd, so my dad and I will be attending.

Muskie fishing on Gull.... That would be great!

I'll be there. And if you fish muskies, you owe it to yourself to show up and support this proposal. If you're unable to attend the meeting, please send Tim Brastrup an email at [email protected] and let him know that you support this proposal. Not only will it be a great thing for the musky fishing in the state of MN. But it will be a great thing for Gull Lake and the Brainerd area.

The public input meeting will be Oct. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Central Lakes College cafeteria, 501 West College Drive in Brainerd.

Hi Ray -

I'll either be there or at the DNR HQ open house the same day in St. Paul. Just depends on how my day goes and whether or not I can slither out of work early enough.

I've been watchign the buzz about this here and there, and what's amazing to me is how LITTLE negative I hear. Not only that, but that the opposition to it has more to do with increased traffic and boat ramp parking spaces than what will happen to the Gull walleye fishery. Maybe people are finally realizing that muskies don't eat every other fish in a lake? All I can say is if they're proposed stocking muskies in Gull 15 years ago there'd have been a mob with torches and pitchforks descending on the DNR office...amazing what a little time and education can do... Even at that though, has to be some kind of medal for Tim Brastrup for having the sand to even suggest stocking muskies in such a famed walleye fishery.

Cheers,

RK,

I agree with you on the amount of negative feedback, I've been surprised there has been as little as there has been as well. Although I think part of that is where it's coming from. I believe that people that are on boards such as this are your more educated anglers. That's part of why they're here, they're open to being educated. And with that, they're more apt to understand the facts rather than believe the myths.

However, still huge amounts of opposition and uneducated people out there. I work with a lot of people at my job. None of them fish for muskies. When they find out that I fish for muskies or when I bring up the Gull Lake proposal...they all have a common belief. Muskies eat lots of walleyes and everything else. This even comes from people that do a lot of fishing. Through no fault of their own, they just don't understand. It's what they've always heard so they naturally believe it. They haven't taken the time to educate themselves on muskies because, really, they've had no reason to do so. But my conversations with the people that I work with in the last couple of months show me that we still have a very long ways to go on the education front. And it's what tells me that this Gull Lake proposal is going to be a tough one to pass unless we as musky fishermen all show our support.

To everyone, please don't let just a few speak up and hope it goes through. Take an hour or two out of your day to attend the meeting. Or take a minute or two and do your part to help a great cause by sending a simple email to Tim at the email noted above.

Hiya -

Just bringing this back to the top to remind EVERYONE on this board to attend one of these meetings if you can. If you can't, please send an email to the DNR about the proposal. It doesn't have to be War and Peace - just a sentence or two with your name, and where you're from. Public support for things like this go a LONG ways...

I'll start another post with the addresses, plus a couple other things...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm
