Spare tire tip

Recommended Posts

I have been told this was a good idea by several people so here you go.

Next time you are in Mills Fleet pick up a spare hub and bearing set for your fish house, boat or any other trailer for the matter and a spindle stub for your bearing set.

1) Weld the spindle stub to the tongue of you trailer.

2) Pack the new bearings, install the seal and mount your spare tire to the hub.

3) Mount the hole thing to the stub you welded to the tongue.

You have now created a spare tire mount for your rig and have a complete set of bearings and a new hub for emergancies.

No matter how you try these things fail at the most inoprotune time and this could easily save your weekend trip.

Been there, done that, works for me.

I've been in a couple of spots where that would have saved us several hours of being stranded and looking for parts. One of the times we had to deal with some guys straight out of DELIVERANCE who thought they could take us city boys for a ton of bucks, because, in their words,"you got no choice."

Wow, this gives me quite the idea.

If a pin system was incorporated to let the tire swing to different positions you could have your spare but also a 3rd wheel to support the shack when pulling with 4 wheerler, keeping the weight off wheeler.

Would a mounted tire hinder your frame from lowering to the ice? I'm guessing you'd have to remove the tire each time you lowered the fish house?

If you have a drop hitch it's not a problem and if ya don't you can weld the pin up rite so the spare is on top of the toung and out of the way. Nice little chunk of info L2H

It would depend on how you mounted it if it would be a problem. I would build a bracket to ensure the tire would clear the ice when lowered.

You could also put it on the back wall with a bracket.

As far as a third wheel for wheeler towing, it would have to pivot somehow to allow you to turn corners. I acturally like a little weight on the wheeler for traction.

I can tow my house with my lawn tractor so it never occured to me to try a third wheel. May be a good summer project for the R and D folks.
