Looking for fall muskie lake ideas "up north"

Recommended Posts

Three of us are looking at getting away for a weekend up north to do some muskie fishing the first weekend in October.

We're considering Mille Lacs, but that's a big body of water and weather that time can be unpredictable.

If you know of a good fall lake within three hours of the metro I'm all ears. We're not muskie experts, but we are well past the point where it's good enough to just get follows. A 38" is as exciting as a 48" for us so a smaller "numbers" lake would be a fine option, too.

I heard some things about maybe some lakes up in the Alex area?

Thanks for your suggestions and if you know a resort to stay at, that's even better.

In October, I would check out Wabedo, or any of the other Woman chain lakes. Wabedo is tough in summer (very clear), but can be really good in fall. Check the narrows between the first and second lake especially - good breaklines. It is near Longville (just south). Lakes are reasonable size (not too big). Don't know any lodging, but you could do a ggogle search. The other area I would consider is Bemidji/Cass/Big Lake/Plantaganette. Good luck.

If Grand Rpaids ain't to far up for you there are quite a few good lakes in this area, all with large fish potential. Blandin Reservoir, Deer, Moose and Spider lakes are all relatively small but with big fish possibilities. They are all within 15-20 minutes of downtown Grand Rapids with Blandin Reservoir right in town. Be sure to get a good map if you intend to fish Deer or Moose as they both have quite a bit of shallow, rocky submerged islands, bars and reefs. Plenty of places to leave your destroyed lower unit sitting on the bottom of the lake if your not careful!!! Those two are great night lakes if your up for that sort of thing. I fished Wabedo and a couple other lakes close to there last year. We caught 2 fish and had a few follows. I was surprised and a little dissapointed at the large numbers of muskie fishermen for the size of the lakes. Guess I'm probably a little spoiled, just not as many people on the lakes around my area. Good luck wherever you decide to go. Hope this helps.

If you plan to fish moose by deer river you might want to use a small boat because the launch is vary shallow, like maybee only a foot or two deep. I was up there over the fourth and my buddy has an 18' lund and we had to push it out about 30 yards to get to deep enough water that it would float with both of us in it. The only reason we got the boat back on the trailer was because it was a roller trailer and we had to crank it up from compleatly off the trailer. It was a pain but i guess we knew the launch conditions before we launched so thats our fault.
