Remy
Have any of you ever stayed at this campground? I'm headed up there next week and I've never been there before and I was wondering what it's like. I'm taking the girlfriend with so I'm trying to find out as much about it as possible so when she asks me a million questions about it I can hopefully answer a few of them. Fishing Junky
Been to Trails End several times. Very nice campground. Not a heck of a lot to do unless you bring a boat. It is on the very end of the Gunflint. What specifically would you like to know about it?
Powerstroke
This is an amazing campground. I really like it there are many different types of sites as along as you can get one. If you don't have a reservation yet you should look into them so you don't end up downwind of the bathrooms. Most of the sites are reservable. If you google it you can find the reservation site. It will tell you right on there what sites are available and any notes about them.I personally have stayed there 4 times and we visit it every time we go up the Gunflint. It is framed by the Seagull river as it flows out of Seagull lake to Gull lake. (This is where the state record walleye was caught). There are some nice areas for swimming and fishing and there is also a waterfall at the base of the portage trail. This is great for pictures and for a nice jacuzzi-style sit.You can have water level campsites, cliff sites or just "in the woods" sites. MOst of them are pretty protected so you don't feel like you live in the road. Its not like going to Gull Lake or Cross Lake. You have some privacy. MOst sites have some shade, but after the blowdown there was some changes. The site details on the HSOforum tell you if its shaded or not. There is an Outfitter there that manages the campground so you can rent canoes or get permits or anything else if you want a daytrip. They also have a diner and small gift shop. I've seen several moose in the area during the summer and last time we were there part of the campground was closed because of a Bald Eagle nesting site. Its a beautiful place and it can be busy, but you can find slitude in your site or even just a few minutes away by boat or hiking. Its a gateway to the BWCA, but its also a nice place to stay and be as close as possible with all your car camping conveniences.Feel free to ask any other questions. I can offer some site recommendations if you haven't found one yet.
Remy
Thanks for all the info. Yeah I reserved the last site avail on Friday. It's overlooking the river. It's sound exactly what I was looking for. Being able to canoe and fish and just get away and relax. What do you mean it's kind of busy? Is there just a lot of traffic at the outfitter? I haven't been up to the BWCA area for about 10 years so I don't know what kind of permits do I need. If I just plan on canoeing around that area and not going farther than a mile or two do I need a permit? One thing I couldn't find online when reserving it was if there was a picnic table at the site. Thanks again for all the info.
