It's a bird... It's a plane... no, it's Superpike!!

Happened last year, but I forgot to post it.

A buddy of mine and I were fishing for pike from a canoe and were having decent luck. We were in a spot surrounded by good structure, so we were casting spinnerbaits like mad. As I was casting out, I saw from the corner of my eye a swirl near my friend's lure as he was bringing it close to the boat. From my peripheral view, I saw him yank in a nice 6 lb nothern, instantly dehook it and in one motion, nonchalantly cast out into the lake again. I heard the fish flopping around the bottom of the canoe, and I said, "Nice one!" to which he mumbled, "Huh? What are you blabbing about?" "That northern you caught" pointing to the flopping fish behind his seat. His jaw dropped. I then figured out that the northern never got hooked. It had launched itself out of the water just as he was pulling out his spinnerbait to take his next cast, and it landed right in our canoe. He immediately returned it to the water, and we figure that's as healthy a fish you could throw back. No fight, no hook, no net... Strangest and funniest way I've ever seen a fish boated.

I've had them jump out of the water, come down and hit the surface plug I was using....had that happen numerous times fishing bass.

Have also had them come out of the water ahead of the plug and cut my line in front of the leader.

When I was a kid, I was fishing at Theodore Wirth Lake and I seen a pike explode out of the water and grab a Purple Martin, or a Swallow, what ever it was, right out of the air.

Maybe we should not only be concerned about that new breed of carp that that is invading our waters, the ones that will jump into the boat and knock you unconscious, but also be concerned about the air borne pike?

Ya never know when one might jump into the boat and get someone by the throat, or steal their wallet, or somethin? grin.gif

Yeah, maybe they have a pepper-spray formula for pike? laugh.gif I sure'd hate to get one of those things round my neck! That must've been a sight to see one of those guy wallop a low-flying bird.

Saw a news bit about the asian carp coming up the Mississippi in Illinois. The boat would motor over a school of silver carp and they'd all go airborne. Bad stuff for that fishery since between the silver, grass and bighead, those fish are munching up the plankton.

What is up with the airborne pike lately? I've seen it only once before this year, but twice so far this summer. I saw a mid 20's" jump about 5-6 feet off one of my favorite spots. And then again off our dock chasing a Johnson spoon just off the lilly pads. Fun to see!

I've yet to get one in the boat yet the easy way. "Fish, Jump in the Boat!"
