Lake Champlain Fishing Fathers Day Weekend

Recommended Posts

2006 LCI Fishing Derby

The water level on Champlain was high and the water was dirty which made fishing tough for us. We launched the boat about 5am on Saturday and headed to an area that normally produces good smallmouth....Normally. Tom was on the trolling motor and we worked up the shoreline for smallies with Mister Twister Exude tubes and grubs while we dragged a crawler harness and a shiner. We picked up a few smallies (not of any size) and a lot of white perch, rockbass, a few yellow perch, and a bullhead on a grub confused.gif .

We moved out to some deeper humps but no smallies. Tried some structure around a couple of bridges and got one small smallie. Are you picking up a pattern? frown.gif It was now about noon so we started working some weedy areas with spinnerbaits. Tom was using a white with silver blades and I had a firetiger with gold blades. Second cast...BAM! Swing and a miss. A few casts later...BAM! Another miss. That happened 2 more times then I hooked up with a ~22" pickerel. The firetiger seemed to be out producing the white, but we were both picking up a few fish as we worked our way up the shore.

We got to a very good looking smallmouth area and we switched back to tubes. There were no smallies in the area, but man were there were pike and they wanted those Mister Twister tubes BAD (Pumpkin Pepper and Green Pumpkin) . We got ~15 pike in that area with the 3 biggest being in the 33-35" range. Nice fish they were not above the normal 10th place weight of 10# so we did not keep them for weigh-in. Oh yeah, I lost a few tubes before I smartened up and tied on a 30# flouro leader. blush.gif

Here is Tom with a couple of the tube pike.

The rest of the day was pretty much the same thing. Pike on spinnerbaits and tubes, almost no smallies to speak of.

Saturday, we started off in the river. We picked up a few smallies and a few pike but the action was not too hot, so we moved back out to the lake. Miss bay did not produce much of anything for us. 2 small LBM and a couple hits from pike....that was it. We worked a few more spots with the same slow pick.

Thank goodness for the pike. They kept us going this weekend. We landed ~60 in the 2 days and missed/lost just as many. We had about 20 smallies with the largest ones running in the 2.5# range. It was a good weekend overall, but I'm hoping the water will be a little better to us next year.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
