Night time fishing question ??

Hi guys:

I was just curious. I live down south and come this time of year and much earler we dedicate almost all of our time to night fishing for bass. I was on Mille Lacs a couple of weeks ago and saw some really big smallies and the first thing that came to mind was night fishing for the low light conditions and the fish not being as skitish.

Do you guys night fish much ? I know the few smallmouth we have on our clear lake sure love the black spiiner bait at night. Not to mention the jig n' pig or a black 5" tube on the rocks.

I know that manuvering on Mille Lacs at night might be a little tricky. But I would think a guy could pick a big bay or two and stay on the trolling motor all night and not leave the area till after the ealy morning buzz bait bite...

Just curious - I am trying to line up my vacation for next year and thought I might come a week later to avoid the night ban and chase some of those realy monsters I saw and could not catch.

I love night fishing, although I havent night fished on a boat yet, I know that sounds weird but we just bought a boat last year and before that I did shore fishing pretty much. There is a certain time of year on a local river, at the dam, that there are hundreds of fish just waiting for you to cast. Roughly around 1am-2am I caught 3 walleyes, 2 northerns (None of which I landed since I was trying for bass) a handful of NICE bass, smallmouth, largemouth and rockbass, and I even caught something unknown that just took my line and there was nothing I could do about it, it took all my line (even with me trying to grab the line with my hand it was pulling it through my fingers) and when the line ended it snapped my pole in half LOL (Crappy pole) Never knew what it was, but my only guess is a sturgeon, anyways, I think nightfishing is exciting, cuz you dont really know whats there untill you get it to the surface right in front of you.

Hey Deitz:

I have caught 12 blacks over 9 lbs. My biggest being 9 - 15.

I am having trouble breaking the 10 lb mark. Every one of them caught at night. It might surprise you to know that at least 5 of them have come on a zoom 4" centipede in watermelon color. Anyways - I am frothing to head back that way and but some time in on the night bite. I hope you do head out on night and then let me know how it goes for you. I know those big smallmouth feed much heavier at night up there just like they do down here.

Haven't done it in a while, but a buddy & I used to fish a lake down in Mankato where he lived, & we'd catch nice bass around midnight. They'd come into this particular bay (early, before the weeds took over in mid-June) to feed for about an hour & bambambam! Then it was over. We'd catch 8-12 nice fish in the span of an hour or so from shore, then pack it up & go home or try for walleye.

Always good fun! I caught my biggest walleye ever in that same bay on top-water, too. grin.gif

I fish for bass at dusk and after that, and have very good experiences - action is as good if not better than during any daylight hours. My only problem is staying up late - I usually go to bed about the time most "night anglers" catch most of their fish. It is a lot of fun, because you can't see what you caught until you get it in the boat. I can't imagine catching something that just runs away with all of my line and then breaks the pole - that would definitely be a story my friends and family would hear many times! cool.gif

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
