Merc 40hp 4stroke

RipJigger

Question

I have a 99 mercury 40hp 4stroke outboard.Since the day it was new I have been having some trouble with it dogging out when you give it full throttle,ex:when trying to pull the kids behind giving it a goose from a standstill it just powers out or dies completly.I brought it back to the dealer twice with no solution.Just wondering if anybody else having this problem or is it my eternal bad luck.

I've seen quite a few of the newer mercs do that. My old mans got a 2001 that did. I took a look at it and all it needed was to have the idle adjusted a little. You'd be amazed at what a small adjustment on the carbeurator would do. I'm not sure what they did at the dealer, but I'm just telling what worked for me. Its always a good idea to have the repair book for any toy such as a boat motor. If I were you, I'd go get the book and see if you can make the adjustments yourself. Matt

Thanks Big,they adjusted the carbs at the dealer and it helped a little.Someone told me that if I get in touch with merc i'll find that there is a recall on that particular carb system so I'll have to try that. Thanks,Ripjigger
