Boat trailer question for rollers

broncosguy711

Question

I have a Escort trailer that has come with the 2 2 x 4 pads. and I was wondering if I am able to change it over to rollers as the boat is aluminum and not fiber glass. the issue is centering on the trailer stinks in windy weather. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks-

Are you backing the trailer too far in to the water? If you have it positioned properly, the bunks should guide the boat to the center. You need to have the trailer far enough out of the water so the boat has to be driven or cranked on the last few feet. Roller trailers, in my experience, make loading and getting centered more difficult than bunks.

About the only advantage to a roller trailer is that you can launch at shallower ramps. A roller trailer does not support the hull as well as a bunk.

I have a trailer with both bunks and rollers and it works pretty good. The bunks make loading and unloading a little difficult in shallow water. But the rollers make it difficult to center in windy waether or current (the boat hangs up on the rollers). To help with centering I added guides that are made of PVC pipe, that I bought, onto the sides of the trailer. I adjusted them so that when the boat is all the way forward the pipes are just barely touching the gunnels. Doing this has made my loading tremendously easier.
