200 Merc Opti

HARPOON-OR-BUST

Question

This problem has got me stumped, hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction.

I have a 2000 200 opti, this weekend when running the motor at WOT (against the wind) the rpm's would show around 6000, normally they are right where they are suppose to be. I drive this boat a few times a week and it is set up with the correct prop and is not overtrimmed and so on. I have only seen this happen 2 others times once was against the wind again and the other was against the current on a river. I can't hear an RPM difference and I am pretty sure the gauge is just acting funny, but to add to it, a couple times when starting the motor this weekend the RPM light would come on and the warning beeps would start while the boat is at idle.......??? Anyone?

It idles fine and shows the correct RPM's there. But the RPM light and horn did also sound a few times this weekend at idle. That is the only time it showed any signs of something wrong. At WOT against the wind or current is the only time this has happened which doesn't make sence. When it is doing this the RPM gauge does seem a little "floaty" it seems that it isn't reacting correctly it acts like it is floating in there. In others words when a change the throttle position the needle reacts in bigger jumps than it should. If that makes any sence. I am sure I could take it out tonight and it would run just fine.
