power trim question

crappieslapper

Question

I have a 90hp Mercury that occasionally doesn't want to trim down. No problems with raising the motor up, just in lowering it, and only once and a while. It seems like there are 2 seperate celenoids (sp), one for up and one for down, If I jiggle the one around while I press the switch, in instances where it's not working, I can get it to work. Is this celenoid on its way out or do you think there might be a wiring problem, or what are your thoughts?

Thanks much,

Dan

It could be either.. but I'd guess a solenoid.

Here's a quick way to check - swap the wiring connectors on the solenoids, so what used to be the up solenoid is now the down solenoid and vice versa.

If the problem switches to be a up problem instead of a down problem it's a solenoind, if not, it's a wiring problem.

i would check your wiring for the coil that trims down, the coil it self should be ok but the wires maybe coroded or loose, any yws you still need voltage to lower your motor as you have to move the spool in the valve to realease it , normally a coil is either good or bad its just a bunch of coiled up wire that creates a magnetic field when energized, good luck

I have a 2000 Yamaha 50hp 4 Stroke. My lastest problem is the trim/tilt. When I raise it, it will slowly fall back down. It usually take about 15-20 minutes for it to go all the way back down. Also when I am going across the lake it starts to drop, then I have to keep adjusting the trim/tilt up. Took it in and the guy said that there are two valves that could be leaking. He said that it would be about $400 to replace these valves. There are no visiable signs of anything leaking. Any ideas on what would be causing this???????

It's probably what the mechanic is saying... early 50HP Yamaha 4 strokes had some problems with trim and tilt leaking down over time...

One possibility, perhaps a long shot though, would be to check with twin cities outboard if they have any used T&T units (same as what you have now) and replace the whole works....
