Do a search for "GPS" in this forum. You will get more information than you can read in one sitting. For what it is worth, I have an i-Finder Pro and really like it. For a few more bucks, you can now get an i-Finder H2O, which is water-proof...still within your price range.

I just ordered an iFinder H2O, because my first iFinder was not waterproof, and I found it out the hard way. I like the iFinder and would recommend it, but for outdoor use I'd definitely get a waterproof model.

The Megellan Meridian series floats and is water proof. It takes standard memory cards, cant remember which kind. The basemap will show major roads and the outline of most lakes.

They sell for about $250 in stores but you can get them for under $200 online.

The Magellan sportrak series has built in memory(limited) and a smaller screen. The basemap has less detail and will not show the lake outlines.

The lowrance Ipro is not water proof and does not float. The H2o model is water proof but doesnt float. At least for me having it flooat would be the deciding factor.

I have a Garmin GPS/MAP76.

This thing will do anything you want, and you can download CD's with lake maps, more than you will ever need, and not use up all the memory. The road maps are outstanding. It floats, and is probably the most user-friendly unit I have ever seen. But it will set you back a little more than $250..., but the money is WELL SPENT!!!!!!!
Go somewhere that has a BUNCH of GPS units, like Cabelas..., look at all of them available.., see what you like.., and what is MOST user friendly, unless you are really "techy".., and I think you will like the Garmin. (Garmin does make a GPS/76 that is NOT the MAP/76).

I have the cheapest Garmin etrex. It works great however if I were to buy now I would go Lowerance. It accepts the MMC cards which could be a great help on ice as well as on water. Also if you have the map create you could have roadways on a MMC while in the car. If you just want to mark spots plot trails the little etrex is great and very easy on batteries.

Garmin Rino 120 or 130. I have the 120 and I love it. water proof and it floats. It also has a two way radio and if your buddy has one and you can't find him in the woods you can send his unit a ping and it'll tell you were he is.
