Valv or someone familiar with telflex safe t steering

Mykal

Question

I have a teflex safe t steering setup on my Lund Angler SS. I noticed that my steering wheel has slowly worked its way about 1/3 off from center. I took the steering wheel off and got down to the small cast aluminum wheel that holds the steering wheel in place but I cannot get this piece off the main center bolt. It looks like there is a small "tab" from the cast aluminum wheel that goes right into the center bolt. I do see where the cast aluminum wheel has a stamp on it that says "top" and this is off to the side 1/3 of course. How do I center the steering wheel?

Do you mean your wheel is not centered when running straight ?

Does it look crooked ?

I don't think there's an adjustment, some wheels have 3 slots for the key to fit into,so it will look "centered", otherwise you might have some steering helm issues that might need to be checked out.

How big of a motor do you have ? How old is the boat ?

Valv, that is correct. The steering wheel itself is on center tothe main bolt, but the wheel is 1/3 to the right when the motor is straight. I have 3 other bolts that hold the wheel to the cast aluminum wheel. The whole package is 2000, the motor is a 90 Merc horse. It steers fine. I did look under the console and there is a cotter pin inserted where the steering cable comes in from the motor with instructions on how to install uninstall a new cable. What "key" are you referring to?

Thanks

If the wheel was "crooked" from factory I wouldn't worry about it, if not, something happened and it has to be addressed.

The wheel has 1 center nut, remove it, and has a tapered shaft with a woodruff key, that's what keep it from spinng on shaft, some wheels have 3 slots where they slide over key (2:00, 6:00, 10:00 o'clock) so it can be straightened up, some have just 1 slot.

The installation bracket for the helm can be moved over one way or another, but it doesn't "slide" by itself, it has to be unbolted, so you have to discover why it is not straight now.

Also check the large cable nut on motor end, if it got loose it will change the wheel position.

Bingo! The large cable nut is not tight to the black nut on the motor bracket. I can see about 3 threads between them. However, when I try and turn the cable nut the whole cable assembly twists along with it. Is this a problem?

There's always some empty threads on tube, nut doesn't have to be tight against motor black nut.

You have to use 2 large wrenches, one to hold motor nut (black) other to tight cable nut (silver).

If you have few thread "free" as I said it not a problem, they never get to the end, just be sure silver nut is tight, not loose.
