help getting started

WALLEYE HUNTER

1st Off Welcome to the Darkside.

If you look into past post you should have tons of info.

Starting with gear. Any heavy bass gear with line#15+ will work. The rig is just your standard slip sinker setup. Weight depending on current/bait size, Swivel, leader and Hook. Circle, khale or Oct hooks all work good.

Channel cats use cutbait such as suckers, chubb or redhorse.

Flats like livebait suckers, chubbs or bullheads.

Locations can be tough, but look for current breaks or wood near deeper water should hold some fish.

One of the things that really helped me was watching any of the in-fisherman videos that get specific about locating fish. I also did some reading (most libraries have books about catfishing, the In-fisherman book was the best.) I then grabbed a map or two of the river I was going to fish and plotted out some spots. It was pretty cool when I actually started catching fish....IT WORKED! This HSOforum has been an excellent source also. Good luck...

Do some research looking through the old post and if you still have questions don't be afraid to ask.

You want to fish for Flatheads or Channels? Techniques are a bit different. Rigs are basically the same but locating and bait selection are different.

Sounds like you are targeting some good water that holds both channel cats and flathead cats. Like Rushing said, there are a few similarities and many differences between fishing the 2 species.

A simple question would be "Do you plan to fish during the day or at night?" For the most part, you can catch channel cats all day but you definitely need to be fishing flathead cats at night.

Feel free to ask any questions.
