Bird question

Hey guys.. I live in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and we were down by the lake yesterday and saw a flock of birds on the water.

They are black but they are not loons nor are they ducks.

They were smaller than either a duck or a loon as well.

Would anyone know what they are?

Thank you Minnow! I think you are right. I looked up coots and that is what they looked like. Learn something new every day, I have never seen them before.
