my dad picked this up on clearance somewhere and gave it to me. planning on hitting mostly crappies with it. is it possible to get larger fish with it also. a friend of mine said you can catch even northerns with it, just takes a little longer of a fight.

Sure, that rod will work for larger fish as well. A lot of anglers target walleye with ML action rods. And it will also handle bass and pike, but like your friend said, it might just a take a little more patience when reeling the fish in. You'll be fine using that rod for a vatiety of conditions.
