Boat wiring help

I am rewiring a boat. Bilge pumps, aeroator pumps, electronics. What is the best gauge of wore to use for these items? I am thinking 16 or 18 guage? Does anyone know what the standard is?

Most references I found recommend 16 or larger. I would prefer a 14 or even 12 depending on the length from the panel to the equipment, and the type of equipment and the risk of voltage losses and wire heating.
