traveler
Anyone been out there? We've made 4 trips to the Kenai peninsula, and are planning a much awaited return trip for 07'. I've always had a notion to see Kodiak. It would add about 700 bucks to the trip to get us and our wheels out there for a few days, is it worth it? We mainly want to target kings and reds; we will either go early/mid June, or late July. Which time period is better for reds or kings on Kodiak, and are there even strong enough king runs in the rivers to target? Is it safe to assume the halibut fishing is on par with Homer/Seward? Anything else out there thats a "must see"? Really anything anyone who's been there has to offer would be much appreciated.
GoodToGo
Oh man, let me tell you about Kodiak! The worst trip of my life! It was actually, but I would be more than happy to go back and try again. we had seven days of rain, pea soup fog, delayed salmon runs, missed charter flights, it was awful. That said, here is what I know about kodiak that could be helpful...the halibut fishing was very good, we went out once and did very well. the road system was pretty limited and seemed to get hit very hard, lots of combat fishing. We were supposed to get to the off road system rivers by 4 wheeler, but the flooded rivers prevented that. I would make sure you are getting to the remote rivers by a reliable method. This was quite a few years ago, so I don't know about the status of the fishery now. Good luck.
traveler
GTG, thanks for the response. Sounds like you really got nailed out there, we've experienced all that, but thankfully not in the same trip! I'm disheartened to hear about the rivers being crowded, that was one of the reasons I was thinking on going out there, to escape some of the combat. That I can get on the peninsula. Guess I'll keep looking into it, thanks again.

Boss Hogg
Two years ago this June, we made a trip to Kodiak. Unlike GTG, that was one of the best fishing trips I made to Alaska. The weather was blue skies for three days. The pink salmon were thick in all the rivers. So much, that I actually got tired of catching fish. If we saw anybody else fishing, we just moved to a spot to be alone. We had no problem at all being by outselves. Many time the pinks were so thick that you would foul hook more then you would mouth hook. One time I broke my fly rod in two. I took the short end and pushed it down inside the shaft of the larger section and ended up with a 6 foot rod, but that was all I needed. Never leave home without duct tape. One day we drove down to some bay on the ocean. Got out our spinning rods and went casting. Picked up some silvers. That was a riot too.We flew in from Anchorage and rented a car. I have relation in Alaska, so I suppose I will be making the trip up the Alcan highway this spring again. There is a smoke house right by the airport in Kodiak. We bought some smoked halibot and king salmon. That was the best smoke fish that I ever ate. Be sure and stop there if you go.
