Another trolling question.

Recommended Posts

Im going too be spending 2 full weeks up on Winni this year and i plan on spending more time on fishing muskies. With the vast expanses of cabbage and weedbeds im thinking trolling might be a good option too hook up on my first muskie. Can i get some opinions on some lures i might try too pull and maybe at what speed i should try pulling them. Or if anyone else has some expierience on Winnie and has a suggestion on something else too try im open too trying anything.

I have had good luck slow rolling spinner baits with willow blades. Keep your speed slow enough so the lure ticks the weed tops when you go over the short stuff and don't hesitate to crash that lure into the heavy weeds from time to time. Oh ya, and lots of corners. Speeding up and slowing down the bait while changing direction can be the trigger the fish are looking for.

I would assume you're talking Summer and not Fall? If so a good bet during the middle of those hot days is to fast troll bucktails. I really like to troll Harassers at 4.0-5.5 MPH. At that speed I'm usually able to go from the inside weedline to the outside without fouling the lure. Pay close attention to the points. I've done well coming across a point - heading into deep water. Keep your bait in the prop wash and cover some water. Oh yeah, hold on! shocked.gif

I mean mid, hotter then all get out, black flies, can't touch the metal in the boat, sunburnt, hot dog days of summer. Don't know why but Winnie fish react well to this slow motion pesentation. If I am trolling deeper water, spines or points I will put on a crank bait of some form and just rip along at 5-6 mph.

Thanks for the replys guys. I'll be up the first week of august. When you speed troll those bucktails you have them right behind the boat it sounds like? And even though your in say 8' of water with weeds 2' off the bottom those skis will come up and hit that bucktail? And when you say slow roll the spinnerbaits how fast is slowrolling? Say 2mph? Any of you guys have particular times of the day that your trolling techniques might be better? Thanks again.
