stam34
when is the best time of the year to go catfishing on the Red ?
fiskyknut
September I'd say is my favorite month. Mid/late August and the first part of October can be darn good too. They are quite catchable from May and right on thru the entire summer, but the Red is so volatile and prone to flooding with the spring and summer rains. Flows/levels are usually more user friendly late summer and early fall, and the BIG cats are fattening up for the winter and are down right easy to catch then too. Spend a bit of time reading some posts from summers past on this Catfish forum and also on the Red river forum and you'll have plenty to ponder. Ooooh I love that muddy water. I Da Man
Standard answer would be...when you can! Spring is best, fall is second best. Rest is in between, but still good catten according to Stu's in Canada. (note about spring...see post above.)
Dennis Steele
I've smacked them in the spring and I've smacked them in the fall. North of the border, the consensus seems to be spring. South of the border, I'll refer you to Fisky. I haven't fished the lower stretches in Fisky's neighborhood yet. That is YET.
