Merc 115hp needs lower seal and poss rebuild

A guy I work with has a 115hp Merc, 1984, on his fishing boat. Don't ask me why someone needs that big of an engine, I sleep, eat, fish and drink beer in my boat and my 25hp has always been fine. Anyways, enough editorial, he was told he needs a new lower seal on the power head. $1000 to $1250, mostly labor. He is willing to spend the money if he has to, but does anyone out there know of a shop in the western or nw part of the Mpls area that will work for less money than $100/hr? And do a good job?Or, anyone have a 115hp merc in that era for a reasonable price?

It's definitely high, but to replace seal they have to disassemble whole powehead, not easy, and cheap, and definitely lots of hours.

Has he considered trading in for another motor ?

Thats what I told him to do. But, he just bought this last fall and I think since he was burned he is afraid he will just get someone elses bad unit again. Oh well. Life.
