Where are the mid day walleyes?

It never fails except once on 3" of ice. I hunt and hunt all day. 6' to 40' of water. Flats to breaks to gravel bottoms to weed beds...nuttin..zippo. Then at 4:30 to 5:30....Walleyes. Anyone know why?

Two factors are at play here:

1. Cold water slows the matabolism of the fish which reduces their need to feed. They only expend energy to feed at the two optimal times of the day, morning and evening. They spend the rest of the day laying on the bottom resting or loafing to conserve energy and they are in a negative feeding mood--even if you find them, they typically won't bite.

2. The second half of the reason is water clarity. For example, lakes with clear or dirty water such as Mille Lacs (clear) and Lake O' the Woods (dark water).

If you want to catch Walleyes all day, try dark water lakes that typically have a better daytime bite.

Also, when you're looking for a good spot to catch Walleyes on any body of water, look for baitfish holding areas or areas with Perch actively feeding during daylight hours--the Walleyes will frequent these spots during their feeding sprees.

Chef has a very well written post and has it pretty much right on!

Walleyes can be very difficult to pattern on clear water lakes during the day. If your into seraching out walleyes during the middle of the day, hit stained waters. Lake Of the Woods is a perfect example. You often have a hard time catching fish at night there, most of the bite happens during daylight hours.

Thanks Chef, that explains why this old central ND, reservoir raised fisherman is having less day success then I'm used too. Actually it's like learning all over again to fish MN. and a lot of fun! The lake I'm learning is stained and I know a place just off a deep basin and near the weed line wear I have noticed there is always a boatload of perch feeding. Also that's exactly what I'm getting out of the stomachs of the walleyes I am getting. Maybe I'll have to do some snooping with the aqua vu and slow down a little.

Now if we could just get some -0 temps so I'm not leaving a wake going accross the lake with the wheeler. blush.gif
