I use a fathead head only hooked thorugh the lips and rarely lose my minnow head or a fathead pinched in half hooked through the nose with the half of the body below the head still partially attached. Be sure to remove the air sac.

I also fish it the way you do at times and live with the occasional lost minnow.

Keep at it till you get good and don't forget to take the minnow away from them. There usually seems to be a magic depth where most fish strike if they're going to as you slowly raise the bait.

Confidence and persistance will pay off for you.

An example for you: I had a problem switching from live bait to plastics in early spring and in the fall. So I just went cold turkey and refused to bring live bait with me and only brought plastics. Now in those time frames plastics usually will outfish live bait and I'm always comfortable passing up livebait under certain condifions.
