Circle hooks for pike?

Rondaxe look in the musky pike forum and you will find all sorts of discusion about this. I have been trying it with mixed feelings so far. It is an art those circle hooks, but the pike I have hooked are hooked solid.

Jon is right. Setting circle hooks properly takes a little practice but once you get it down they work great. Best way to describe it is start pulling line rapidly to set the hook but don't jerk it. Making sure fish is moving helps a ton. You will still miss a few but that happens with regular hooks anyway and I've yet to gut hook a pike in the three years I've been using them.

Circle hooks work very well for pike on tipups, as well as pretty much everything else you can pull up an ice hole. They hold fish better, so you are less likely to lose a fish at the bottom of the hole too. Love them for lake trout while fishing deadbait, as well as Lake Whitefish while using minnows. ~hogsucker
