Im new to the blackhills area and was wondering if anyone does or knows anything about ice fishing. I know there are a few lakes and i will be bringing my gear out from home over xmas, but i was wondering if someone has a little insight on the sport.

I haven't fished Deerfield for a couple years since I moved, but when I lived there, all it took was a small jig and a waxie about anywhere on the lake to absolutely have a hay day on the trout! We used to winter camp there every year and fish for a week straight. We focused on the small bays around the edge of the lake. It was very very rare for any of us to have a day of fishing where we caught less than 50 trout.

I have never targeted panfish in the hills. I know that there are perch and some various small pannies in both sheridan and pactola lakes. As for walleye, you would have to travel to Orman dam (Belle Fourche Reservoir) or Angostura. I have not heard any reports of people ice fishing these lakes but I know that they do both hold walleye.
