duck and goose report

Recommended Posts

Here's a report from one of the guide services around DL. It's in the post just prior to your's.

Snow Geese are on the move! Hurricane lake which is about 35 mils west of Devils Lake was holding about 50,000 birds at mid week and with cold temps in the forecast this weekend that number will increase dramatically in the next week. Most of the local ducks and Canada Geese have been pushed out by heavy hunting pressure but a lot of northern birds are making their way down. HOpefully the magration goes slow so we can get out and enjoy a few real good snow goose hunts. Good Luck

I just got back from the devils lake area,i stayed there 5 days and just duck hunted. I have been up there for 3 years now and this has been the worst year by far. The first couple days it was hard to locate any birds at all. I also hunted out west of devils and that was just worst. We finaally found a small quantity of birds. but nothing like the normal years. this year was just such a dissapointment it almost makes you think weather or not to go back if it keeps happening.

I will second birdislandeye-----we hunted for five days(got back yesterday) and the birds were few and far between----we hunted the edmore area(30-40 miles NNE of DL)found some snows, canadas and a few thousand ducks 10 miles west of langdon after some scouting, but they were gone by monday morning---scouted north to the border, to wahles, and back and found VERY few flocks of geese. If you head up to this area in the next week prepare to put on some miles and do some serious scouting----it will pay off.

The trip was a blast but seeing alot of empty skies(and ponds) sucks.

Well the bird are here that is for sure. I have been working here for the last month and there are lots of duck around. I haven't been hunting myself but I would think it would be that hard to find birds. Geese are around as well. Maybe the birds just know the gun is at home so they come and visit me since they will be safe.

Be heading up west of Devils 60 miles next week for the Deer opener, talked to the family and the word is the birds are moving in right now, Birds were moving into were they hunted in Alberta and Sask 1 1/2 weeks ago. So the hunting and push will be determined by the weather North of the Border, and the mallards were not as thick as the Snows, Freezing Temps and snow will push them out, if its mild it will be a gradual push but the ducks will wait till the very end. If a clipper comes in that usually brings them down. GL
