wrshog
Ok I have a question for all those with an opinion out there. With all the standing water from this latest rain is it going to be worth hitting the lake this weekend? Will they even be flying?
Eric Wettschreck
Depends on how much you like hunting. For me, any day in the duck boat is better than a day in the boiler room. Dude, it's always worth it.

Guest
I am wondering on this weekend myself.. all this rain there is going to be lots of water out there in the fields making new puddles, a good blast of cold came through to move some locals out.. with any luck maybe some birds are taking advantage of this NW galing out there...What the weekend holds... who knows?I will be out there starting tomorrow to find out. Sifty
I would look to any field that got harvested in the last week. The water should be puddled up in some of them. I know down by me alot of bean fields started coming out on Friday night.Sifty
Buckslayer
This isnt going to push everything out, maybe the teal and woodies, but who cares. The mallards will stay for a while. Get permission for a flooded field then instead of hunting a lake.
Eric Wettschreck
I'll be on the pond this weekend. I had to work nights the weekend of the opener, so I couldn't hunt. The fellas I hunt with said things were pretty slim. I guess it depends on where ya are. Lawdog, who doesn't live that far from me said he had a great opener. Soooooooo, since, like usual, I haven't really done enough scouting. I'll be on the pond or local lake and see what I can see. lawdog
Just talked to some guys who did REALLY good field hunting this morning Boiler... You may need to drive west 15-20 minutes to find em but they are definitely around!
Eric Wettschreck
I hear ya. My neighbor has a farm place near Hadley. Pasture has a nice pond that HAS to be way flooded now. I'm thinkin that's where me and my boys will be Saturday morning.
wrshog
boilerguy,Going hunting is not the question. I was just wondering if any one thought the lakes would be any slower due to the standing water. I am guessing they will be. I am really not sure why I even asked, I don't have a choice in the matter, I have no fields to hunt. Plenty of boats and water though.
Eric Wettschreck
I noticed you're out by Wyoming. There is an old dairy farm about 5 miles west of ya on county rd 22. There are good fields for hunting there. The farmer (I'm not going to put his name over the internet) is quite a nice guy and always let me hunt them. How do I know this??? I grew up around there. wrshog
Boilerguy,Wyoming is the home of my families old homestead. The brown house back off the NE corner of the freeway next to the river. It's been tough getting on the fields around here. A lot of them are simply not around any more. Dang urban sprawl..... Thanks for the advice maybe I'll make a trip out that way. For this weekend I am going to be back on the water.
Eric Wettschreck
Dude,I think I remember that house!!! Yes, the urban sprawl there is CRAZY. I remember when Wyoming was Russ's barber shop, the bank, the old Dairy Queen and the dump and that's it. How times have changed. If you're going water, and you have a chance to go about 5 miles west of ya. I recommend hitting Tammerac lake. I've always had good luck hunting there. Been a few years, however. I've also done quite well on the west side of Island lake. The west side has a ton of cattail cover and is fairly swampy around. You'll need a boat for both these lakes.Either way, good luck to ya.
wrshog
boilerguy-It's been there a while that's for sure.... The house is now Dewey's barber shop and Russel has retired but the shop is still there and still called Russel'sMy boats are currently on Green lake, my father in law lives on the south end and we have always had some shooting there.I think I may have been right. There certainly was fewer birds flying over the water this weekend than I think I have ever seen. Is Tamarack that little "pond" on the north side of 22? It has a little creek running into it from the other side of the road. If that's the one you are talking about I have often wondered about it. Eric Wettschreck
Take 22 to CTY 26. Take a right on 26 and go a couple of miles into the Martin Lake area. Turn right on Martin Lake road. Go about a mile or so and take a right on the first road there. I don't know it's name or number. This will take you back to Tammarak. I'm fairly certain you can't see the lake from 22, but you can see it from 26 when you are near Camp Salie. If you drive on 22 about 3/4 mile past 26 you will see a "pond" with a creek running into it. Almost directly across from the Linwood Lake access. This "pond" is Island Lake. There is access to it from Cty 26. The creek running into it comes from Linwood Lake, into Island, and on the other side of Island there is a creek coming out that goes to Martin Lake. I used to set up around where the creek runs out of Island. Later in the season that area was always good for bills, buffleheads, and goldeneyes.Good luck to ya.
