Walleye fishing is pretty good, definetely lots of big fish in there. If the weather cooperates you should be able to find them, when things get hairy is when it can get tricky.

Lake Trout fishing is outstanding. I don't fish trout much, but we hammered them on Red. We fished Main lake reefs in 5-55 feet of water, dropped large chubs on a bottom bouncer. ALmost all fish were in the 30 inch class, it was nearly impossible to catch smaller ones. Had a great time.

Brian, I am also interested in knowing more about this lake. Any place you would recommend to stay at that is close to some of the fabulous laker fishing you speak of? Also, I have heard that the eyes can average very nice size there. Is the walleye fishing pretty consistant there? Been going to LAc Seul for 9 years running so am getting kind of spoiled.......

I used to stay at a place called Black Bear Camp, it is located aproximately 30 mins. out of town to the west. It is not a fancy resort by any means in terms of the cabins, but they cook good food there and are extremely nice people.

I am not familiar with the area of lake directly in town, although I am assuming it can't be that much different.

Laker fishing is a 5 min drive away from where I stayed. If we were catching these fish with the very little experience we had, I am guessing a more proven Laker fisherman would have done even better.

As far as walleye consistency, that is tough to say. I went up 4 years, every other year the fish were in different locations then the year prior. This was definetely weather related, but the fish definetely don't jump in the boat, you have to find them. Every year there were many fish caught in camp in the 26-30" range, also many trophy caliber northern were caught while walleye fishing. Two of the years the fishing was outstanding, the other 2 years we had to work for em hard.

As far as comparing it to Lac Seul, I was just out there in July. That was the best walleye fishing I have ever seen for numbers. Red is certainly a quality lake, but competing with Lac Seul may be asking a little too much. If you are a hardcore walleye fisherman you might find yourself disapointed. On a sidenote, I have heard many people rave about great walleye fishing on Gullrock lake which is near Red, haven't fished it myself but you may want to check that out. Hope that helps

Brian

Thanks Brian, I am thinking more in terms of catching quality fish, whether it be eyes, lakers, pike, whatever. Lac Seul is pretty hard to compare to for numbers. Best numbers fishery for walleyes I've ever been to, and I've seen a few... smile.gif 30" lakers are certainly nothing to sneeze at. What time of the year have you typically gone up to Red?

Eye....all 4 times I was up there in the second week of June. I was told by a guy who always came up that the fish are generally in the same areas in August. Example being they told us the reef we were catching the lakers on was usually only an "August spot". You could basically pick out large parts of shoreline, troll husky jerks and get yourself a mixed bag of pike and the occasional big walleye. Let me know if you ever make it up there, I can think back and give you whatever spots I know of/remember
