7" Bullheads ?????

I just bought the In-Fisherman's “A Night on the River”. It is a very informative video that breaks down just about everything you need to know about catching flatheads on a river. It’s also pretty good because they are fishing on the Minnesota river and they haul in a pair of 40# + flats and a few in the 20# range. I recommend it to all that like to fish for flats.

One thing I noticed about the video is that Doug Stange says that they are using lively bullheads up to 10”. They also catch one of their 40#ers on a 10” bullhead.

So what is the deal with the 7” and under bullhead for bait law? It seems weird to me that the In-Fisherman staff would incriminate themselves and roll film while they are using illegal bait. So what is the deal, is this 7" law new or what. The video is maybe only a couple years old.

Here is how I interpret the law.

Only minnows may be transported live across land, and bullheads 7" and under are considered minnows.

Rough fish with the exception of carp may be used for bait and a bullhead of any size is also considered rough fish.

So if they cought the bullheads in the water that they were fishing and didn't transport them accross land, it was legal.

Not positive, but I think thats how it works.

I'll second that interpretation

You can't be sirius? Does anybody really know the law?

So the DNR/CO pulls up to some people fishing with 10" bullheads on the river "MN/Miss" and the people say we just caught them and thats legal?

The In-Fisherman staff, myself, and almost everyone else in the state did not know at the time they filmed the video that bullheads under seven inches were illegal. The law is very confusing and frustrating as we all know. Actually, if they caught the bullheads on the MN River and did not transport them they may have been legal.

They "public comment" period is over for DNR the rule change. Hopefully next season we can enjoy bullys up to ten inches or so.
