Bottomline Sidefinder

Are these sidefinders any good? Do they really show if fish are to the side of a boat?

There is a 1200 for sale at a reasonable price and I was thinking of picking one up.

How good of a deal? The really cheap ones are, well, really cheap. Knew a guy who had one (he bought it for under a $100) and it melted one warm July day. No talk, the sun just melted the LCD and ruined the unit.

As for the sidefinding feature, I'm pretty sure it just shoots out a really wide angled transducer beam, covering a bigger area but losing sensitivity in the bargain.

I've had one for 7 years. I paid 600 for it. I Don't like the sidefinder feature. The cold weather affects the contrast. It fogs and the lenz is cracking. I wasnt impressed.
