reedo
I am wondering what size spinning reel is the best for walleyes? I will be using it for trolling crankbaits, jigs, and river rigs. I usually fish the Mississippi.
0 Northlander
Spinning reel. What Size rod, line and lure weight etc. would really help. Im guessing a 2000 size spinning reel will do but maybe a 2500 for line capacity for long lining cranks. I also recomend a line counter reel for trolling cranks. Something like a Diawa SG17LCA or a Okuma Magda Pro MA20DX. The Diawas are pricey but worth it and the Okuma are nicely priced and mine seem to be holding up so far after a couple years of use. 0 zelek
I think I'm going to pick up one of the Sealine line counter reels Northlander. I was trying to decide between the SG17LCA & the SC27LCA. Don't you think the 17 would be large enough on say a 7 1/2 or 8 foot rod?? Like I mentioned before, I'll likely go with 10/4 or 14/6 fireline and the 17 will put on 320 yds of 10 lbs mono it says. That should equate to 375 yds or more of the 10/4 fireline I'd guess and I can't imagine ever needing more than 300 yds. It looks like the 17 comes with the dual padded handle too. 0 Northlander
Zelek I looked at my rods tonight and I run 4 8 to 8.5' board rods with Diawa SG17LCa's and love them. Im running 2 with 10# XT and 2 with the 10# Power Pro. I Mostly walleye fish but they can handle Lake Trout and Coho on Lake Superior no problem. The line that is, the reels will handle anything with correct line and rod. On my 9.5' dypsie rods I have Diawa SG47LCA's and have 50# Power Pro on them. 2 of My Downrigger rods also have the Diawa 47's with the power Pro and the other 2 have Okuma Magda Pro MA20DX's on them with PP. I really like the Diawas a lot. The Okuma's are nice as well and a great price but Im still questioning how long they will last. So far 2 years and they are doing OK. Lots of guys around here run the Diawas and I have heard no negatives on them. I have heard of a few Okumas going bad. Hope this helps you. Im positive you will love the Diawa 17's if ya get them. 0 zelek
That does help a lot. Thanks!! I'll be picking up one of those 17's this week and hoping to put it to good use on some area lakes soon. I'm currently researching the walleye / cisco interaction and looking forward to trying a new approach for some big ones.
0 HEUY
Another item to consider is a linecounter that you fasten on your rod. I've used one for years on a 4000 size spinning and also a hvy muskie rod when trolling. It is not as handy as the Diawa 17LC that I also use a lot but gives me extra flexibility. No complaints on my Diawa at all.
