reedo
I am wondering what determines the size of a spinning reel you should buy besides the line capacity?
sightfisher
There are several other factors: What size/species fish are you after, what size baits, what kind of cover/structure you'll be fishing,....A good 'all around' size would be a 2500 Shimano reel. reedo
I do most of my fishing for walleye on the Mississippi. Trolling crankbaits, jigging, and live bait rigs are my main ways of fishing.
uffdapete
reedo - it is somewhat a matter of personal preference as far as the size and weight you like. For the application you describe I would agree with the first reply and get something like a Shimano 2500 if you're going to use mono line and use it for jigging and cranks.I personally like light, fast reels - 7-9 oz with 6.0:1 gear ratio - something like the Shimano 1000 or 1500 series and then use a 4-6 lb. diameter superbraid like Power Pro, Fireline or Spiderwire. reedo
Thanks for your feedback. I was just concerned about the gears in the different sizes, if they could handle trolling. I have a cabelas Tournament ZX 2500, and a Quantum catalyst CI20PTS which is a little smaller than the cabelas reel.
