Shimano Corvalus

Recommended Posts

I bought the new Shimano Corvalus musky reel at Thorne Bros. earlier this year after they told me if I didn't like it after the season, I could exchange it. Well I absolutely loved it until last weekend. It started screaming when I cast it, something is definitely grinding against the gears. After fiddling around with it, I can't figure out what the problem is. When I adjust the tension it reduces the noise somewhat but then I get backlashes.

Has anyone used one and had similar problems? I know I can return it but I love the performance, or at least I did.

I would just take it back and get thier opinion. I had a Calcuutta giving my trouble. One of thier help did about 30 seconds of work on it and it was fine, and has been fine since. I have also started sending all of mine into a reel shop every winter to have them "serviced". All the money invested in boats, trips, gas is not worth a dime if you can't fish because your reel isn't working. Sometimes a drop of lube is all they need.

I have always taken them to a liitle reel repair shop in Hackensack MN. The gal in there always did an awsome job, and wasn't to costly. I used to live just down the road so I could load all the pieces up from my attempted repair in box and run them down there. This time I don't know were I'm going to send them.

I have had the same problem with my Abu Garcia 6500 C3. I always like to oil up all of my reels before the season starts, but midseason it will start screaming again. I just take it apart and oil up all the gears. That usually takes care of the problem.

I was scolded by my reel repair shop technicain for putting oil where it shouldn't be. To much oil on the gears can "fling" off and gets on parts that are designed to operate off friction like drags or releases. It also can get gummy and when it gets on auto casting brakes debri will build up and cause screaming, both from the reel and the operater. They made me promise to stop screwing with my reels and just bring them in.
