Fixing scratches on depthfinder screens

get-the-net

Question

Wondering if anyone has any experience fixing scratches on LCR/LCD gps and depth finder screens? I tried using a buffing wheel, but managed to make it worse. Good thing I practiced that on an old screen first. I used toothpaste as a polishing compound and had some success. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have rubbed scratches out of the windshields of airplanes with a product called mirror glaze. If you can't find it at a fleet store try your local airport. You can do a google search also. It takes a lot of elbow grease. Use a soft cloth, not your power buffer.

Will the mirror glaze hurt the plastic? I'm just worried that I'll make it worse. I think it got hit by bug spray once, so there are little pock-marks in it. Crappiebait, do you just brush the finger nail polish on, or do you daub it on? There is only one small scratch so I'd like to try the finger nail polish trick on that spot.

I wish I could take the credit, but Lowrance Customer Service emailed that advice to me a few years ago. In my case the screen was not scratched, but was getting "flaky" - kind of looked like it had a lot of water spots on it. They said it was damage from the sun. I polished them once or twice and they've been good for years since then.
