ironman
Let me start by saying I just learned...from a cd...how to call ducks last fall...so I'm very green. However with that being said today I went down to a local lake to try out my new fly rod. Alittle windy...and I'm alittle rusty. As I'm sitting in my truck..a few mallards were flying around..looking like they wanted to land..but wouldn't for some reason. I still have my call in the truck..so I started blowing on it...they turned immediatly. Three of them broke off and flew directly over my truck but I only saw two land nearby in the lake. When I got out of the truck the third drake was right in front of my truck..passenger side. I scarred the hell out of him..he flew about 50 yards away..so I started calling again...he called back all the while waddaling back to the truck. No decoys..just me and my truck...am I good or what? Actually he was probably just really horny. Got a good laugh about it anyway.
icehousebob
Birds can react differently to calls depending on the season. Last spring when I got to work one day the geese in the nearby marsh were staking out their nesting areas. I blew one of my goose calls and a couple pair of geese went ballistic. They took off and kept circling the marsh, honking their brains out. They must have thought some strange goose was horning in on their territory. Really fun to watch. fishermann222
I have found it alot more fun to call ducks in the spring. Where I live now, we can hunt them in the spring and working the flocks of ducks with a call is what I like best about it. 2 hen decoys and a light quack and the drakes pour in. Looks like ducks are just like humans in that sence.
