USPENAMC
Hi I was wondering if any of you have ever used chicken liver for these cats. I know in south texas we would use a piece of chicken liver wrap it with a panty hose so it wouldnt come off the hook and come apart that easy plus the little holes let the smell go through and we had great luck catching some cats. Just wondering see if any of you will try it out next outing see how it goes... Also we used to make doughballs and then soak them with chicken liver and blood same idea and concept. Thanks
Mr Special
I have used chicken liver and had good luck with them. But I personally like cut bait. There easier to work with, and don't have to worry if it still on the hook or not.
Dan Thiem
Here's a thing I have done with chicken livers. While the liver is still fresh, I hook it up with a snelled leader. Then I put it in a jar with the leader hanging out. Then I put the lid on it and let it set in the sun for a while. That way when I get to the river I just hook up the leader, open the jar lift the stinky thing out and cast it out there.Never even have to touch the stuff. maj330
What kind of cut bait works for you most often and how would you rig it?Thanks in advance for the tip!
Dennis Steele
Chicken liver does work and work very good but like the other guys said you'll get smaller fish.If your after "eaters" it would be a good bait. You'll get eaters on cutbait plus some nicer fish.Lots of kinds work, suckers, mooneye or goldeye, tullibee and creekchub are some of my favorite. Shad is probably the best on rivers with shad but its often hard to get.To rig it you can cut it in strips or thick "steaks" like salmon steaks depending on the size of bait you have. You want to let the bait hang on the hook and not bury the hook into the bait. If I am fishing stips of cutbait I hook one end about a quater inch into the strip so that the strip trails behind the hook. This also helps to prevent your bait from twisting up your line in the current. If I am fish steaks of cut bait then I hook it just under the skin so that only a little portion of the bait is on the hook and the point is fully exposed. This keeps your bait from fouling your hookset. No need to worry that the cat won't get the "point". They typically engulf the entire offering, hook and all.
